Google’s annual roundup of the year’s most popular searches provides a slew of suggestions for content creators hoping to capitalize on long-tail keyword opportunities. Every year, data on the most popular searches is released, which is intriguing in and of itself, but you might be wondering, “What can I do with this information?”
When taking the first look at the data, it doesn’t appear to have much more effect than satisfying the curiosity about what people search for on Google.
As lockdowns overtook Australia’s two largest states and people sought immunizations, the Covid-19 outbreak figured prominently in news-related internet searches this year. Google produced statistics on the most popular search phrases from the preceding 12 months, revealing that sporting events were once again the most popular, with Covid queries ranking first in the news category. In Australia in 2021, the NBA, AFL, cricket, NRL, football, Wimbledon, and the Olympics were the most searched subjects.
The Covid epidemic in New South Wales dominated news searches in 2021, with the Delta outbreak putting the state into its longest-ever lockdown. Victorians, who have spent the most days in lockdown since the outbreak began, did not appear to be as interested in learning about the situation in their state, with “coronavirus Victoria” ranking fifth in news-related searches, only behind Queensland at third.
People Googled “how to make face masks” more than any other DIY-related search for the second year in a row. At-home activities such as crafting your candles, playdough, paper planes, and chatterboxes skyrocketed when residents in NSW, Victoria, and the ACT were subjected to prolonged lockdowns.
People searched for ways to receive their vaccination certificates, book their Covid vaccine, link their Medicare to myGov, and enter the Million Dollar Vax campaign as Australia’s vaccination “stroll out” gained traction in the second half of 2021.
We created a list of the top 100 trending Google searches and most Googled inquiries from our database of 20 billion terms for your convenience. This keyword data is for July through September 2021, and it includes both US and global data.
As a side note, we deleted all Not Safe for Work (NSFW) search phrases from the top 100 list, which accounted for around 20% of the total. For the most up-to-date information, this list of top trending searches is updated every quarter.
Take the overall top 10 trending searches in 2021, for example:
The results are mostly unsurprising, with items like Fortnite, Avengers: Endgame, and Meghan Markle making an appearance at the summit of search queries. However, some very curious trends might indicate how people’s interests will shift through 2021.Â
There were plenty of familiar names in this year’s list (Avengers: Endgame took the number one spot), but there was also room for some lesser-known content to make it onto the list.
For this year’s list, we collected data from SimilarWeb to see which mobile apps and games people used when searching for the top trending topics on Google in 2021. Despite all of the buzz around “Fortnite,” it doesn’t appear in our list since we’re concentrating purely on mobile apps and games (and not websites). So if you’re looking for a way to get ahead of your competition, look no further than these hot new trends below:Â
“The 2021s is expected to be the beginning of commercial application of Artificial Intelligence (AI).” – Forbes.Â
According to The Guardian article ‘Top 10 Trends for 2021’, “A.I. will become a normal part of our everyday lives – and it will be underpinned by data.”
While the epidemic may have cleared the stadiums, it couldn’t stop the Australian love of sport, with basketball, footy, cricket, tennis, and the Olympics accounting for seven of the top 10 searches overall.

Data is extremely valuable to companies and organizations who mine the web daily for consumer patterns and trends. When you think about how much information we share online on Google or Facebook, just consider that IBM’s Watson analyzed 300 million newspapers from 1700 to 2009 within seconds to help give medical advice to doctors in 2011…
